Thaler, who joined WPI in 2018 as the school’s deputy counsel, had been serving in the interim role since October 2024, according to a press release from the university.

“Matt’s deep understanding of higher education law, his principled leadership, and his unwavering commitment to WPI’s mission have made him an invaluable asset to our community,” Grace Wang, president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, said in a press release. “I am confident he will continue to serve WPI well as our vice president and general counsel at a time when the legal and regulatory challenges facing universities are increasingly complex.”

Prior to joining WPI, Thaler served as the in-house legal counsel for Ribbon Communications (Nasdaq: RBBN), a publicly traded software company based in Texas, according to his LinkedIn profile. He graduated from Bates College with a bachelor’s degree in 2002 and earned a doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1865, is a private research university with roughly 7,300 students.

The previous general counsel was David Bunis, who is now serving as senior counsel at Cloherty & Steinberg LLP, a Boston law firm.

Eric Casey is the managing editor of the Worcester Business Journal, a Mainebiz sister publication.
