Belfast boatyard earns national award

A Belfast boatyard in its second year of operation was named the 2013 Boatyard of the Year by the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association.

Front Street Boatyard received the award at the organization's annual conference last week, according to a press release.

The organization's president, Pam Lendzion, praised the yard for redeveloping a group of waterfront buildings in Belfast into what she called "Maine's newest, most rapidly growing and impressive yachting facility."

Mainebiz spoke with J.B. Turner in 2011, after he left the Augusta boat builder Kenway Corp. to head up the group of entrepreneurs who redeveloped the former Stinson sardine cannery into Front Street Boatyard. Prior to the redevelopment, the building sat vacant for over a decade.

Turner, a 26-year veteran of the industry, was previously the director of advanced technology for Kenway. His partners in the boatyard business are Taylor Allen, Steven White and Ken Priest.
