Susan Faunce, a shareholder at Berman & Simmons who joined the Lewiston-based law firm two decades ago, has taken the helm as its first female managing director since the company was founded in 1914.
Faunce started her new role this week. She succeeds Craig Bramley, who will retire at the end of this month after 29 years with the personal injury-focused boutique.
The firm has offices in Lewiston, Portland and Bangor, and is staffed by 14 attorneys representing clients across Maine.
“Our firm has a long-standing history of advocating for individuals in personal injury, medical malpractice and wrongful death cases,” Faunce said in a statement emailed to Mainebiz.
“We remain committed to delivering the highest level of care and service while securing results our clients deserve in their time of need,” she added.
Faunce, whose practice is focused on medical malpractice, wrongful death and other catastrophic injury cases, is the current president of the Maine State Bar Association and past president of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association.
“For me, this work has always been about standing up for people when the stakes are highest,” she said in a news release. “I look forward to leading our team of exceptional attorneys and staff as we continue delivering record-setting results for the people of Maine."
Faunce, who grew up in Lewiston after spending the first five years of her life in Seoul, South Korea, is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the University of Maine School of Law.
In a 2022 “On the Record” interview with Mainebiz, Faunce recalled watching her single mother — who barely spoke English — navigate a foreign legal system with the help of a female attorney.
The experience “made me realize that lawyers could provide a voice to people who felt lost, unheard, or overwhelmed in a complicated legal system,” Faunce said. “I am truly honored to be able to help people at some of the most difficult times of their lives.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Faunce told Mainebiz that Berman & Simmons “will focus on strengthening our core practice areas and using improved processes and technology to continue to pursue complex, high-stakes cases and be a powerful force of justice for our clients.”
