Beverage tax on the ballot

Maine voters will decide whether to scrap the tax increase legislators passed on beer, wine and soda on the November 4 ballot.

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap yesterday validated about 72,000 of the 95,000 signatures submitted by the "Fed Up With Taxes Coalition," according to a press release from the coalition. Only 55,087 signatures were needed to force a vote on the new taxes. (Read the recent Mainebiz cover story, "Bottled up", for more on the people's veto of the increased beverage taxes.)

The Legislature in April voted to increase taxes on beer, wine and soda to fund Maine's state-run Dirigo Health Program.
