Bob’s Discount Furniture plans to open in Bangor next week, giving it a second location in the state as consumers spend more money on home furnishings amid the pandemic.

The Connecticut-based chain, which has 150 stores in 24 states, plans to open a 31,000-square-foot store at 6 Bangor Mall Blvd. The store will open March 21 and hold a grand opening event April 8-10.

“Bob’s has had its eye on Bangor for a long time,” Bill Foppiano, regional manager at Bob’s Discount Furniture, told Mainebiz. “Its proximity to I-95 and the surrounding communities is excellent. Consumers flock to that area.”

“We also have a location in Scarborough and opening in Bangor just connects the dots for us."

He said there are no plans to open other Bob’s locations in Maine at this time.

So far, the store has hired about 20 employees for the new Bangor store. A Bob’s location typically would have 30 to 50 workers at full staffing, Foppiano said.

“We’re extremely happy with the flow of candidates that came in. We have a good amount of people to open the store,” Foppiano said.

Bob’s, like other home goods companies, has benefited from the extra time consumers are spending at home during the pandemic, and hopes that trend will continue.

“Initially, COVID was hard on everyone. But fortunately, we had plans in place for an omni-channel platform where people could shop from their homes, their computers, their phones or in the store,” Foppiano said.

“Buying patterns changed. We’re seeing consumers spending a lot more time at home and making their home life comfortable. We’re seeing more consumers shopping online, and in person, due to the work-from-home movement. The focus is on the home."

Bob’s focuses on “value priced” furniture for consumers and touts its off-brand products such as the Bob-O-Pedic, a takeoff on the high-end Tempur-Pedic mattress brand.

Founded in 1991, Bob’s is the 10th-largest U.S. furniture chain. Private equity company Bain Capital acquired a majority stake in the company in 2013.
