Carnaval ME will donate to Westbrook nonprofit

Carnaval ME, the outdoor winter festival planned for Portland’s Eastern Promenade in January, has named a nonprofit to receive donations from the event’s ticket sales.

WinterKids, a Westbrook group that promotes cold-weather activities and recreation for children, will receive up to $10,000 from sale proceeds and a matching $10,000 from an anonymous donor, festival organizers said Friday in a news release.

In addition, Carnaval ME collectible merchandise and auction items will be for sale to benefit WinterKids.

Carnaval ME is scheduled for Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, 2020, and is expected to draw over 10,000 people to the Eastern Prom.

Among the highlights: a snowboarding competition sponsored by Newry ski resort Sunday River, a professional ice sculpture contest, outdoor illuminations and art, space for families to snowshoe and sled, and the Maine Bicentennial Snow Ball, a gala with dancing, Maine craft beers and food from local restaurants, all inside an inflatable, insulated, 400-person-capacity “igloo.”

Tickets go on sale Saturday and prices vary. A ticket to the Snow Ball will cost you $100, but a two-day pass to events outside the igloo is $20. All proceeds from the first day’s sales will to go to WinterKids, up to $10,000, when tickets are purchased online using promotional code “WINTERKIDS.”

WinterKids was founded in 1997 by the Ski Maine Association and became an independent nonprofit organization in 2000.
