Census: Maine grew slightly

Maine's population grew by 2,297 people, or just two-tenths of a percent, from July 2006 to July 2007, according to figures released today by the United States Census Bureau.

Since 2000, Maine's population, which now stands at 1,317,207, has grown by fewer than 40,000. In comparison, Nevada, the fastest-growing state, increased its population by 2.9% from 2006 to 2007. Arizona, Idaho and Utah also posted big population increases. Showing slow growth were New York, Ohio and Vermont. And Michigan and Rhode Island actually saw declining populations.
