College of the Atlantic hires new president

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor has appointed alumnus Darron Collins as its new president, effective Sunday.

Collins, who graduated from COA in 1992, previously spent a decade working for the World Wildlife Fund, according to The Associated Press. He has a doctorate in anthropology from Tulane University, and is the first alumnus to lead the college. He told The AP he wants to explore the idea of a tuition-free campus in the future, but acknowledged it probably wouldn't happen in the next 10 or 20 years.

Collins replaces David Hales, who stepped down in December, saying it was the right time for a leadership change.
