The U.S. Department of Labor will award a $2 million grant to Brunswick-based Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. to support training services and employment assistance for the nearly 1,200 Maine workers who have been affected by layoffs and business closures.

The National Dislocated Worker Grant from the DOL provides relief funding to areas experiencing a major economic dislocation event. In 2024, multiple companies in six of the state’s coastal counties announced significant staffing reductions.

Layoffs were concentrated primarily in the manufacturing, food service and retail industries. Six employers — including L.L. Bean, Portland-based WEX Inc., onsemi in South Portland, several food service businesses and others — had layoffs of 50 or more workers.

Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. is a nonprofit that provides retraining and skills development services for laid-off workers seeking assistance in Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo and York counties. Since 2000, the nonprofit has supplied training services to over 31,000 workers in coastal Maine communities.
