Dora Mills fired from MaineCare post

Dora Anne Mills, the former longtime head of the state's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has been fired from her new position as medical director of MaineCare.

A statement released yesterday by John Martins, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, said Mills had been relieved of her post "as DHHS continues to assemble its new leadership team," according to MaineToday Media. Mills, who worked for 15 years as director of the CDC, was hired as medical director of MaineCare, the state's Medicaid program, in early January. Former MaineCare Director Tony Marple, who hired Mills, was fired about a month ago and has also been replaced with an acting director, MaineToday and the Bangor Daily News reported. Both Mills and Dan Demeritt, Gov. Paul LePage's spokesman, declined to comment, but Demeritt did say that her firing was not related to her support of a ban on the chemical BPA in plastic containers, which LePage is seeking to repeal.

Representatives from the state's health care industry told the Bangor Daily News that Mills is widely respected and is credited for successful public health initiatives, including lowering tobacco use rates and teen pregnancy rates, and reducing childhood obesity. A number of health officials, including Tina Pettingill, executive director of the Maine Public Health Association, told the paper they were shocked to hear of her dismissal.
