Down East electric co-op raises prices

The 11,000 customers of Eastern Maine Electric Co-op will see at least a 23% jump in their electricity bill next month, according to the Bangor Daily News.

EMEC, based in Calais, blames the increased cost on the effects of the state's deregulation in 2000 of the electric utilities industry, which separated the electricity generators from the electricity suppliers. EMEC owns the transmission lines, but now buys electricity from De Pere, Wis.-based Integrys Energy Services. Integrys is the one to blame for the increased costs, Scott Hallowell, EMEC's CEO told the paper.

While an average residential customer of EMEC will see a roughly 23% jump in electricity costs, a small commercial customer's bill could increase as much as 28%, and a large commercial user may see an increase in the range of 27% to 29%, according to the Daily News.
