Editor's note: Employee owners take center stage with ESOPs

For more than a decade, Mainebiz has taken an active role in covering the evolution of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

We’ve done stories about ESOPs, run related “how to” columns and hosted a panel discussion around the topic. The rise of ESOPs has been interesting to follow.

Now, we offer the second annual ESOPs Essentials issue.

As Maine small businesses continue to evolve, the employee ownership model offers advantages for both the owner and the employees.

The succession planning aspect of ESOPs continues to offer a viable alternative to a traditional sale of a company. Offering the ESOP model is a way to hold onto Maine’s small businesses.

This issue offers an overview of the ESOP model, while getting into some specifics on how to navigate the M&A process and answer questions about the cost, the payout and what’s in it for the employees.

The issue also offers “how to” columns from experts and a list of Maine’s largest ESOPs.
