EMMC board approves new contract

Eastern Maine Medical Center's Board of Trustees yesterday approved a new contract for 870 nurses at the hospital, resolving a two-week stalemate and averting a strike.

At a meeting yesterday afternoon, 19 of 20 board members approved a three-year contract, effective immediately, the Bangor Daily News reported today.

The disagreement stemmed from the makeup of a professional practice committee that would monitor staffing issues. The new contract establishes a committee with eight staff nurses and eight nurse managers who will meet monthly and send recommendations to the chief nursing officer.
