Goldfish Swim School franchisees who have locations in New York and New Jersey have opened their fourth location in Portland.

Tim and Jennifer Casper opened their latest Goldfish Swim School at 512 Warren Ave. As franchisees with the company for nearly 10 years, they own and have interest in three other locations.

The Caspers said their plan is to add approximately 40 full-time and part-time jobs, including management, lifeguards, instructors and front-desk staff.

The couple has family ties to the Portland area.

“As parents, we understand the importance of year-round swim lessons,” they said in a news release.

The franchise company,  headquartered in Troy, Mich., was founded by Jenny and Chris McCuiston when they opened  the first Goldfish Swim School Birmingham, Mich., in 2006.

The first franchise opened in 2009 in Farmington Hills, Mich. Today there are more than 150 schools open or in development in more than 34 states and Canada, with more than 100,000 students per week enrolled.

The Goldfish Swim School in Portland offers year-round indoor swim classes and programs for children age 4 months to 12. Programs range from introductory parent-tot programs to beginning swimmer lessons and advanced pro-level lessons.

The company’s aesthetic includes brightly colored walls, tiki cabanas and surfboard benches around an island-style hair drying station and the pool. There's a viewing gallery for parents to watch lessons.

Features include a pool heated to 90 degrees, air temperature kept at 92 degrees and a class ratio of four children to one instructor.

The proprietary curriculum, called “Science of SwimPlay,” seeks to build life skills in and out of the water using play-based learning in a fun and safe environment.

There’s also a recreational swim team for swimmers up to age 12.

Additional programs include clinics during school and summer vacations, open swim times for families, weekend birthday parties, a snack shack and a Treasure Island retail shop.
