Fairchild moves HQ to Silicon Valley

Fairchild Semiconductor has moved its corporate headquarters from South Portland to Silicon Valley to better align itself with other leading technology companies.

Kevin London, the company's senior vice president of human resources, told the Portland Press Herald the transfer will not result in changes to staff or operations. The company, though incorporated in Delaware, has been legally headquartered in South Portland since 1997 when it was formed as a spinoff of National Semiconductor. The company has grown from $500 million in sales to $1.6 billion, and shifting its headquarters to its existing office in San Jose, Calif., reinforces the company's status among high-tech operations, London told the paper.

Fairchild will continue to maintain its three corporate offices, including its location in South Portland. The move is not related to the company's plan to lay off 120 workers from its Western Avenue plant as part of its manufacturing restructuring.
