Fee arbitration criticized

Opponents of a fee levied to non-union state employees today filed a No Confidence Resolve with arbitrators in Boston.

Thirty-five Maine state employees expressed no confidence in the arbitration process, which they say is unable to accurately and impartially determine whether the non-union fee is fair because of a hurried, biased and exclusive process, according to a press release from >a href="https://www.unfairshare.org" target="_blank">Unfairshare.org.

Since 2005, all state employees have been required to either join the union or pay non-union dues, which amount to about half of the cost of union dues, according to the Kennebec Journal. The debate over the fairness of the so-called "fair share" rule has gone on since 2003, when the non-union fee affected only new hires.
