Report: Conserving equals big savings

A new report says Maine businesses could save more than $450 million a year by being more energy efficient.

The report, prepared for the Governor's Energy Efficiency Summit by the Muskie School for Public Service and the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, concludes that being more energy efficient is a valuable tool to stay competitive amid rising energy costs and economic challenges, according to MaineToday.com. The report's strategies for energy saving include replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, installing new boilers, water heaters and pipes, and upgrading motors and computers, according to the paper.

The report estimates more energy efficiency could create between 1,500 and 2,500 jobs by 2020 and increase Maine's gross domestic product between $170 million and $260 million.
