Maine powers up

Officials at Maine Public Service Company in Presque Isle and Central Maine Power Company in Augusta are building a transmission line between Aroostook County and the power grid in the rest of Maine and New England.

The two companies began studying the feasibility of the Maine Power Connection in March 2007. At a press conference scheduled for this morning, company officials are expected to announce the launch of a more detailed analysis of the project, which would cost as much as $500 million and provide the capacity to handle as much as 800 megawatts, according to a Maine Public Service press release.

Maine Public Service says the transmission line is necessary to support wind power development in Aroostook County.
