Fire destroys E. Boothbay tug builder

A fire Friday morning ripped through Washburn & Doughty Associates' boat-building facility in East Boothbay, causing tens of millions in damages.

The fire, which was caused by an unexplained explosion, completely destroyed the boat yard's 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and the two tugboats under construction inside. The company employs 85 people, plus dozens of subcontractors, Bruce Washburn, one of the company's owners, told the Kennebec Journal. A press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office pegged the damage at $30 million.

The boatyard, which Washburn and partner Bruce Doughty started in 1977, was insured, and plans to rebuild are already underway.
