Fisheries council mulls rules overhaul

The New England Fisheries Management Council is meeting in Portland for the next four days to discuss a complete overhaul of the way the region's fisheries are managed.

Rather than the traditional approach to fisheries management of limiting the number of days fishermen can work at sea, which has not succeeded in sustaining populations of fish such as cod and haddock, the management council will discuss implementing an idea called "sector allocation," which would give groups of fishermen a percentage of the annual quota for each fish species and allow them to manage it for themselves, according to the Portland Press Herald.
