Dressbarn, a women’s clothing retail chain based in Mahwah, N.J., announced today it plans to close 650 stores nationwide, including five in Maine.

The company said in a news release that it’s beginning a “wind down” of its retail operations and that all stores will remain open serving customers, and that vendors and suppliers will continue to be paid on normal terms, as it proceeds with the planned closings.

The company’s e-commerce site will remain open and there are no current changes to Dressbarn’s return, refund and gift card policies, the company said in its release.

Here are the five Maine locations that will eventually be closing, according to the company’s website:

  • Dressbarn, Marketplace at Augusta, 14 Stephen King Drive, Augusta.
  • Dressbarn, Bangor Parkade, 496 Stillwater Ave., Bangor.
  • Dressbarn, Shops at Biddeford Crossing, 113 Shops Way, Biddeford.
  • Dressbarn, Kittery Outlet Center, 340 U.S. Route 1, Suite 2, Kittery.
  • Dressbarn, Mall Side Plaza, 198 Main Mall Road, South Portland.

Steven Taylor, chief financial officer of Dressbarn, made this statement about the closings: “For more than 50 years, Dressbarn has served women’s fashion needs, and we thank all of our dedicated associates for their commitment to Dressbarn and our valued customers. This decision was difficult, but necessary, as the Dressbarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today’s retail environment. During the wind-down process, we will continue to provide our customers with the same great experience both in-store and online, offering them even better deals and value. We will work to assist our associates through the transition and maintain existing relationships with our vendors, suppliers, and other key stakeholders through this process.”

Plans for closing individual Dressbarn locations, including information about store closing sales, will be shared during the wind-down process, the company stated in a news release.

Dressbarn has retained A&G Realty Partners to assist on real estate-related matters.

Dressbarn employees will be notified when decisions are made about specific store closures and provided with transition support.

Troy Taylor, president of financial advisory and investment banking firm Algon Group, has been appointed as independent director to the board of directors of the Dress Barn Inc.
