Brann & Isaacson, a Lewiston-based law firm, has hired former prosecutor David Joyce as a litigation partner in its Portland office.
Joyce joins the firm after two decades of federal prosecutorial experience, most recently as an assistant U.S. attorney.
During his 17-year tenure at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Joyce led hundreds of grand jury investigations and served as first chair in trials across matters including corporate misconduct, health care fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, public corruption, environmental crimes and violent narcotics trafficking.
He most recently served as senior litigation counsel, mentoring attorneys across the office and providing ethics guidance. He also completed a stint as chief inspector for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Joyce began his legal career as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Gene Carter in the District of Maine.
He spent three years at the Justice Department’s Environmental Crimes Section in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, he helped investigate the 2005 BP Texas City oil refinery explosion and the discharge of heavy fuel oil into San Francisco Bay by the M/V Cosco Busan container vessel in 2007.
Joyce was also an instructor at the Justice Department’s National Advocacy Center in Columbia, S.C., where he gave presentations on ethics and electronic discovery.
“After 20 years with the Justice Department, I am thrilled to join Brann & Isaacson’s talented and growing team," Joyce told Mainebiz. Brann & Isaacson "provides the unique opportunity to represent a Maine municipality one day and an international client facing legal challenges across the country the next day. I look forward to leveraging my investigative and courtroom skills for the benefit of the firm’s diverse client base.”
He holds a Doctor of Public Health from the University of North Carolina, a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law, a master’s in marine policy from the University of Miami and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Williams College.
Brann & Isaacson, founded in the 1920s, employs 20 attorneys across it two offices.
Brann & Isaacson ranked No. 12 among Maine’s largest law firms, based on the number of Maine-based attorneys, according to the 2025 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
