Funding for offshore wind center close to approval

A budget bill that includes millions in funding for the proposed Maine Offshore Wind Initiative is slated for final approval by Congress.

According to a press release from Sen. Susan Collins' office, $5 million for the offshore wind research center at the University of Maine is included in the final version of the Energy and Water Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2010. While the Senate's appropriations subcommittee approved the funding in July, the House version of the bill previously did not include it. The House approved the appropriations bill on Friday, but it must receive final approval from the Senate as well.

Maine's congressional delegation has been pushing for the center since earlier this year, when Gov. John Baldacci met with U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu to propose the offshore wind power research and development center and a demonstration site.
