Good Shepherd buys former BDN printing plant in Hampden

Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine plans to move its Brewer distribution center to the former Bangor Daily News printing plant in Hampden after purchasing the 40,000-square-foot building for an undisclosed price.
The hunger relief organization plans to relocate its Brewer food distribution center and begin operating at the the former printing press on Penobscot Meadow Drive in January 2016, the organization said Wednesday.
The food bank will need to convert the facility into a food distribution center, but once completed, the new building will give the organization additional space needed to expand cold storage capacity and better serve central, northern and eastern Maine, it said in its announcement.
The Hampden location and its 32,000 square feet of warehouse space will also open up the opportunity for the statewide hunger organization to partner with other mission-related organizations in the region, the organization said. Its distribution center in Brewer is 7,400 square feet.
“This warehouse now becomes a huge asset for our network of partners in the region, including food pantries, farmers, volunteers and many other community collaborators,” Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank, said in a statement.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the organization didn’t have a cost estimate for retrofitting the former printing press with refrigeration units, but it expects the project to exceed the $1.2 million it cost to refit facilities in Auburn. Good Shepherd plans to sell its 7,400-square-foot warehouse at 88 Stevens Road in Brewer,the BDN reported.
The organization purchased the building from Bangor Publishing Co., owner of the Bangor Daily News, in a sale that closed Wednesday. David Hughes of Epstein Commercial brokered the deal for the seller.
