Gov. and unions reach deal on raises

Gov. Paul LePage and the union that represents about 15,000 public- and private-sector workers in the state have reached a contract agreement that, if approved by the union, ends two years of negotiations.

The Sun Journal reported the contract deal includes raises and restores merit increases, which had been frozen for four years, for some employees. The new agreement, which would be effective through June 30, 2015, also includes cuts to certain phone allowances and state-paid leave for union members attending an annual convention.

LePage said in a press release the agreement also includes job security protections for workers who decide not to pay union fees.

Tim Belcher, the union’s general counsel, told the paper he expects the union will hold meetings around the state to explain the plan before it goes to a vote.
