Group seeks stormwater regulation for Maine Mall area

A New England environmental law group is trying to force businesses in the Maine Mall area to clean up their stormwater discharge.

The Conservation Law Foundation last Friday filed a petition asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate stormwater pollution in that area, which the group says contaminates the Long Creek Watershed, according to a press release. The regulation would require businesses in the area, including the retail stores, car dealerships, hotels and restaurants, to trap pollutants and filter stormwater from roofs and parking lots before it leaves the building site, according to Current Publishing.

The EPA must respond to the petition within 90 days, according to the release. The regulation, if supported, would be the first action regarding stormwater pollution in Maine, according to the paper.
