Navy seeks developer for former prison

The United States Navy is seeking proposals from developers interested in revamping the former prison at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

The Navy is looking to sign a long-term lease with a developer who could turn the 265,000-square-foot former brig, which hasn't held a prisoner since 1974, into office space, laboratories, a hotel and conference center, or anything else compatible with the shipyard's mission, according to the Portland Press Herald. The Navy has been accepting proposals since February, and hopes to nail down a developer by the summer.

The Navy tried to redevelop the site in late 1990s, when it signed a lease with a New Hampshire developer to turn the prison into office space. That project fell through when the developer died in 2000.
