Rumford mill employees take buyout

Two dozen workers at NewPage Corp.'s Rumford mill are taking an early-retirement package related to the shutdown of the mill's Number 11 paper machine.

NewPage shut down the No. 11 machine on Feb. 29, laying off 23 workers. To avoid laying off more people, the mill offered early-retirement packages to its 70 employees over age 60, NewPage spokesman Tony Lyons told Mainebiz this morning.

Twenty-four of those eligible employees took the offer by the March 7 deadline. The package includes 18 months of health coverage and payments of $46 per month for each year the employee had been at the mill, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston.

With the new vacancies, the mill is planning to recall some of the 23 people who were laid off in February, Lyons said.
