Hannaford offers employee buyouts

Hannaford Bros. yesterday offered severance packages to employees at its Scarborough headquarters in preparation for layoffs it will make in January.

According to a memo to employees from Hannaford CEO Ron Hodge, a tough economy has forced the company to restructure to reduce costs and position the company for the future. The offer to accept voluntary resignation runs through Jan. 16, after which an undisclosed number of positions will be cut, according to the memo. Employees who take the voluntary buyout will receive a severance based on their tenure at the company and be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Hannaford employs 7,000-8,000 people in Maine, making it one of the second-largest employers in the state along with Wal-Mart. Employees who work at the company's retail stores or in trucking and distribution will not be affected, according to the memo.
