After more than five years with Teens to Trails, Alicia Heyburn is stepping down as executive director of the nonprofit that connects young Mainers to outdoor experiences.
Teens to Trails, staffed by four employees. has an annual operating budget of $375,000.
Heyburn took the helm in 2019, leading Teens to Trails “through a period of extraordinary expansion and impact across Maine's communities,” the Brunswick-based organization said in Tuesday’s announcement.
The organization has not indicated a date for Heyburn's departure.
Under Heyburn’s leadership, the organization has more than doubled the number of schools served statewide while extending programming to include middle school students, the group noted in its announcement.
"Throughout her tenure, Alicia has carried a profound respect for Teens to Trails founders, Carol and Bob Leone, often reflecting on the incredible strength and vision they showed in transforming the personal loss of their daughter Sarah into a mission that continues to impact students and educators across Maine,” said Kirstie Truluck, who chars the organization’s board of managers.
Teens to Trails aims to give middle and high school students a lasting connection to Maine's natural environment by supporting school outing clubs, providing grants, training educators and fostering outdoor engagement.
Heyburn's accomplishments include helping create the Educational Trip Leader Permit certification for teachers and launching the annual Life Happens Outside Challenge, which has inspired thousands of middle school students to discover the benefits of outdoor experiences while earning funds for their schools.
Teens to Trails said its board of directors will start a search for its next leader immediately.
