Hearing on limits for truckers called off

Governor John Baldacci has canceled a public hearing on trucking regulations scheduled for today, saying that he wanted to wait until Maine's trucking industry stabilized before implementing any new rules.

"Maine's trucking industry is under great pressure right now with diesel fuel prices reaching record highs," Baldacci said in a press release. Truckers have said their livelihoods are on the brink as a result of soaring gas costs. And Baldacci last Friday declared a civil emergency to better help those in the forest products industry.

The hearing would have discussed imposing restrictions on the number of hours log truck drivers may drive. Maine has in place now an exemption from the federal "100-mile, 600-hour rule," which places limitations on the number of hours log truck drivers may operate within a 100-mile radius, according to the Bangor Daily News.
