Home sales rise, price inches up

Home sales last month rose double digits, while the median sales price managed to also inch up, marking the first price increase since July 2011.

A total of 731 single-family homes were sold in Maine in March, a 13.2% rise over March 2011, according to the Maine Real Estate Information System Inc. The median sales price increased 0.2% to $160,000. For the quarter, home sales have jumped the most in Aroostook County, rising 48%, while they've fallen the greatest in Piscataquis County, dropping 26%.

Nationally, home sales rose 5.9% and the median price increased 1.9% to $163,600. Sales in the Northeast were up 5.5%, while prices slipped 1.9% to $228,300.
