Visitors to the city of Portland will have another hotel to choose from next summer with the opening of a 148-room, five-story hotel now under construction at Thompson’s Point.
With more than 20 hotels, the Portland overnight market will have more competition in the mid-range.
The Residence Inn / Moxy Hotel by Marriott Portland Thompson's Point is being built next to the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, and will be connected to the 34,000-square-foot Brick South event space.
The hotel will be walking distance to the Portland Transportation Center, Amtrak Downeaster rail line and Concord bus terminal.
Amenities will include a restaurant and bar, a fitness center and an indoor pool.
Procon Inc., based in Manchester, N.H., is the general contractor on the project. The company has built more than 20 hotels in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Jersey, along with the West Street Hotel in Bar Harbor.
When completed, the hotel will be managed by Portsmouth, N.H.-based Colwen Hotels, which manages numerous properties in the Northeast and five in Maine: the Portland Harbor Hotel and the Cambria in the city's Old Port, the Inn at Diamond Cove and the Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn.
The hotel at Thompson’s Point is one of two hotels being built in Portland that are not subject to the city-wide moratorium on new hotel construction that went into effect in January, since both projects were approved prior to the restriction.
The other hotel under construction, by South Portland-based Optimum Construction, is located in the Granite Block at 215 Commercial St.
Four other projects, all on the Portland peninsula, also have pre-moratorium approvals. They include one at Canal Plaza, two in Monument Square and one on Congress Street, next to City Hall.
