Hotels in 4 Maine destinations among priciest 20 in US this month

Hotel stays in Maine rank among the nation's priciest this month. In Portland, the average rate found by a survey was $324 a night.
A new survey of room rates spells good news for Maine hoteliers but may scare off budget-conscious vacationers.
Four seaside destinations in Maine rank among the country’s 20 most expensive for hotel stays this month, according to findings published Thursday by travel website Cheaphotels.org.
Bar Harbor ranked No. 5 nationally, with reported hotel room rates averaging $383 a night during August. Kennebunkport ranked No. 9, with an average of $354; Portland was No. 14, $324; and York Beach, No. 17, $284.
The survey considered all U.S. locations with a minimum of 10 hotels or inns, according to Cheaphotels.org. Only properties close to a beach or city center and rated with at least three stars were included. The average rates were based on the cheapest available double room from Aug. 1-31.
With four rankings, Maine landed in the Top 20 more than any state except California, which had five. Massachusetts was home to three of the premium vacation spots: Nantucket, No. 1, $525 a night; Martha’s Vineyard, No. 2, $485; and Provincetown, No. 11, $351.
The rankings also included one New Hampshire destination (Hampton Beach, No. 16, $305) and one in Vermont (Burlington, No. 13, $328). Rounding out the list were places in Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, New Jersey and New York.
A similar study in August 2021 by Cheaphotels.org, surveying only New England destinations but using the same methodology, shows that the region’s pricey summer stays have generally gotten even pricier.
