New hires

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust hired Kristy Goodson as senior vice president, treasury services manager based at Lake Sunapee Bank in Concord, N.H., and working with business customers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

CES Inc., a firm of engineers, environmental scientists and land surveyors in Brewer, hired Justine Drake.

Hydro International, a supplier of storm water and wastewater management solutions in Portland, hired Mark Dennis as vice president of sales. Dennis was most recently vice president of sales and marketing at Trinity Services Group, a food, commissary and technology service provider to the corrections industry.

LDT Human Capital Solutions, a sister company of Springborn Staffing in Portland, hired Diane Abramson as director of human resources consulting.

Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters, a nonprofit in Portland founded to raise private funds for Maine's new national monument, hired Andrew Bossie as executive director and Elaine Tselikis as communications and administrative coordinator. Bossie previously ran Maine Citizens for Clean Elections while Tselikis is principal at VisionTree Creative.

The University of Maine School of Law in Portland hired Jennifer Crane as director of advancement. Crane previously worked in the office of development and alumni relations at Bowdoin College.

The MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor hired Sam Beck as an assistant professor of computational biology. Beck, who previously with the department of molecular biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, will lead a research team focused on the study of progeria, or Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, a rare genetic condition characterized by accelerated aging in children.

U.S. Sen. Angus King hired Jeff Sobotko as press secretary and director of digital media.

Sevee & Maher Engineers Inc., a consulting firm in Cumberland, hired Kristy Bishop as a senior environmental engineer and project manager. Bishop previously was a project manager at Woodard & Curran in Portland.

Gov. Paul R. LePage hired Steven McGrath to serve as the director of the Governor's Energy Office. McGrath, a former CFO of Downeast Energy Corp., was most recently CEO of Greystone Advisors, a financial and management advisory company, as well as a part-time CFO for a number of small businesses in Maine.

First National Bank in Damariscotta hired Jessica Day as branch manager.

Creative Office Pavilion in Portland hired Kate Turner as an architecture and design account manager.

Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation in Newry hired Alex Carr as director of philanthropy. Carr retired from the U.S. Navy in 2013 and previously served on the North Yarmouth Board of Selectmen.

Bar Harbor Bankshares hired Jack Frost as vice president, director of community giving. Frost most recently was director of philanthropy at Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems Foundation.

Mid Coast Medical Group–Orthopedics in Brunswick hired Jacob Furey and Thomas Kryzak Jr. as joint-replacement surgeons. Both Furey and Kryzak received their medical degrees from Tufts University School of Medicine.

Becker Structural Engineers in Portland hired Matthew Legere as a project engineer and Leakana Chan as a designer specializing in computer-aided design and REVIT.

Fluid Imaging Technologies, the producer of the FlowCam, hired Nicole Gill as laboratory technician and Sam Foster as technical customer support associate. Gill previously worked as a fisheries biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, while Foster worked at Old Town Canoe in Old Town, where he was an engineering project assistant.

Promotions

U.S. Sen. Angus King promoted Jack Faherty to Maine press secretary. Faherty most recently served as acting press secretary.

J.S. McCarthy Printers in Augusta promoted Jonathan Tardiff to president of J.S. McCarthy Co. Tardiff has held various roles in the family-owned business over 25 years.

The Montalvo Corp., international specialists in web tension control in Gorham, promoted Eric Champigny to a full time gauging technician, Jack Mastrogiacomo to quality control manager and Josh Harriman to electronics/quality control technician.

EMHS in Brewer promoted Teresa Vieira to president of Sebasticook Valley Health and Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital. Vieira has led Sebasticook Valley Health since 2013 and had been acting president at Charles A Dean Memorial Hospital.

Scott Simons Architects in Portland promoted Kayla Caron to associate.

The Sheridan Construction Corp. in Fairfield promoted Mitchell Sammons to president and Daniel Wildes to senior vice president and COO. In addition, both Sammons and Wildes have assumed ownership of the Sheridan companies. Sammons has been part of the corporation's executive team since 1982 while Wildes previously served as vice president of construction.

Appointments

Tedford Housing, a nonprofit agency in Brunswick whose mission is to find lasting solutions to the challenges of homelessness, elected Kevin Bunker, Kati Chandler, Robin Nilson and Field Griffith to its board of directors and Sarah Piper and Roger Brodeur renewed their terms. Bunker is principal at Developers Collaborative, Chandler is assistant branch manager at Norway Savings Bank, Nilson is a former agency client, Griffith is retired, Piper is commercial loan officer at Bath Savings Institution and Brodeur is social service supervisor quality assurance-appeals at the Office of Child & Family Services, Maine Department of Health & Human Services. In addition, Andree Appel, retired clinical director of Oasis Free Clinics, was elected president of the board; Joyce McPhetres, chief human resources officer at Community Health Options, vice president; Nonny Soifer, executive director of MDSOAB, secretary; and Sally Loving, communications and marketing consultant, was elected an at-large representative.

Katahdin Bankshares Corp., parent company of Katahdin Trust Co. in Houlton, announced the election of Richard Harnum Jr. to its board of directors. Harnum is president of Webber Group in Bangor, focusing on overseeing the real estate and plumbing and HVAC divisions of Webber Supply Inc.

The Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development in Portland added Todd Keiller and Brian Whitney to its board of directors. Keiller is director of intellectual property and innovation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute while Whitney is president of Maine Technology Institute.

The Maine Bankers Association in Boothbay Harbor elected Andrew Silsby as chair, effective July 2018. Silsby is president and CEO of Kennebec Savings Bank.

Achievements

Hardshore Distilling Co. in Portland was selected as a finalist for the “Best Craft Gin Distillery in 2017” in a competition hosted by USA TODAY. The finalists were selected by an expert panel of distillers and spirits critics.

The Brunswick Downtown Association was selected as one of 10 semi-finalists for the “2018 Great American Main Street Award” by Main Street America, a program of the National Main Street Center. The center works to help revitalize older and historic commercial districts to build vibrant neighborhoods and thriving economies. Winners will be announced in March.

U.S. Sen. Angus King presented Bar Harbor Bank & Trust with a Congressional Record commemorating the 130th anniversary of the bank.

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor was listed No. 20 among liberal arts college by Washington Monthly's 2017 college rankings. In addition, the college was among the Top 50 colleges for how well students do after graduation, for graduating low-income students and how well students repay their loans and was listed second on the list for the number of alumni who serve in the Peace Corps, relative to college size.

The Society of Certified Insurance Counselors recognized William Mitchell of GHM Insurance in Waterville with a certificate honoring 30 years of participation in advanced education.

John Cressey, president of Beacon Environmental Consultants LLC in Windham, has been licensed as a professional geologist by New Hampshire.

Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, awarded Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay a four-star rating, its top distinction, for the lab's business practices.

The city of Portland was one of 25 communities nationwide chosen by the New American Economy and Welcoming America to receive the “Gateways for Growth” award, which helps local governments, businesses and civic leaders develop strategies to integrate immigrants and foster economic growth.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine honored U.S. Sen. Susan Collins with an award for her advocacy and commitment to increasing access to addiction treatment.

SIS Bank in Sanford said Roger Guerin was presented the “James C. Scarboro Award” from the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado, which is presented annually by the school's board of trustees to a commercial banker, educator or industry advocate who has provided outstanding leadership to the banking community. Guerin is senior vice president, comptroller and CFO for the bank.

The Maine Wood Products Association in Topsham presented its “Pine Tree Award” to Pallet One in Livermore Falls and its “Pine Cone Award” to Shaw & Tenney in Orono. Also, UMaine School of Forest Resources received special recognition for its dedication in the advancement of wood technology impacting the wood products industry.

The University of Maine Farmington was again recognized as a “Best College” by U.S. News & World Report. The university ranked No. 8 overall within its classification of “Regional Colleges in the North” as well as landing in the Top 10 in three additional categories, including No. 3 in “Best College for Veterans,” No. 4 in “Top Public Schools” and No. 6 in “Best Value Schools.”

The Maine Ski Hall of Fame announced eight new members including Karen Hunter Korn, U.S. World Cup Team freestyle skier; Chip Cochrane, World Cup downhill racer and coach; Ed Rock, general manager of Shawnee Peak in Bridgton; Bruce Miles, president of the Sugarloaf Ski Club, past executive director of the Ski Museum of Maine and certified lifetime PSIA member; Steve DeAngelis, ski coach at Maranacook High School; David Chamberlain, All-American nordic skier; Dick Taylor, World Cup biathlete and U.S. Olympic Nordic Team captain; and Ralph Ostlund, cross country ski racer.

Stonewall Kitchen in York announced its Chunky Peanut Butter received a winning spot in the “2017 SELF Healthy Food Awards.”
