Jobless rate rises to 7.6%

Maine's unemployment rate rose slightly in March to 7.6%, making Maine one of seven states to see an increase.

March's rate ticked up from 7.5% in February, but was less than the 8.3% recorded in March 2010, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. The number of unemployed was 52,800, down by 5,000 from one year ago. Maine lost 1% of its nearly 599,000 jobs over the previous month, the highest percentage of job loss in the country, according to The Associated Press.

Nationally, the unemployment rate dropped from 8.9% in February to 8.8%, a two-year low. Unemployment fell in 34 states and remained unchanged in nine states as well as Washington, D.C.
