Northeast Coating Technologies Inc. of Kennebunk was fined $140,000 over alleged violations of federal regulations on hazardous waste management, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.
The agency inspected the facility in 2023 and found a number of deficiencies of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Maine's hazardous waste management rules. Northeast Coating Technologies was found to be out of compliance with federal and state regulations that are designed to ensure the proper treatment, management and storage of certain types of hazardous waste, the EPA said in a news release.
Under the agreement with EPA, Northeast Coating Technologies will pay a penalty of $140,000, and the company has certified that its facility is now in compliance with both state and federal regulations, the Boston office of the EPA said in an August 19 news release.
The company has taken other steps, including development of an environmental health and safety management system to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
"EPA's core mission is to protect human health and the environment," said EPA New England Regional Administrator Mark Sanborn. "The agreement reached with Northeast Coating Technologies will better protect Maine residents from the risks posed by hazardous waste."
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act gives the EPA the authority to address hazardous waste from "cradle-to-grave." To achieve this, EPA develops regulations, guidance and policies that ensure the safe management and treatment of solid and hazardous waste, as well as programs that encourage source reduction and beneficial reuse, the regulatory body said.
National Coating Technologies, located at at 105 York St. in Kennebunk, is part of the French company HEF Groupe, which has locations in 21 countries. The company provides protective coatings for a range of industries, including medical and dental, military and firearms and automotive.
