Kittery shipyard avoids furloughs

The Associated Press reported that workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery will not be required to take 11 unpaid furlough days this summer, a measure that workers feared in light of federal spending cuts.

According to a memo the news service obtained, the Pentagon has allowed the Defense Department to avoid furloughs for 680,000 civilian employees across the country. That includes 4,700 civilian workers, out of nearly 6,000, at the Kittery shipyard.

The workers rallied in late March to protest the cuts and Maine's congressional delegation also lobbied to avoid the furlough days.
