Lawmakers move to help loggers

In a bid to help the logging industry deal with high diesel prices, the Maine House yesterday passed an emergency piece of legislation to reduce weight restrictions on logging trucks.

The Senate, however, refused to vote on the bill without a public hearing and sent it back to the transportation committee, which will hold a hearing Thursday, according to the Bangor Daily News. The bill, proposed by Gov. John Baldacci, would increase weight limits for logging trucks from 100,000 pounds to 105,000 pounds for six-axle trucks until April 1, the paper said. Diesel prices have increased by roughly a dollar a gallon since this time last year, according to the Associated Press.

The bill would become law once it passes both chambers and gains the governor's signature.
