Lewiston hospital to expand

The state has given the go-ahead to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston to build a $24.5 million operating room, lab and pharmacy.

Regulators at the Department of Health and Human Services originally recommended denying the project last spring, but the hospital resubmitted paperwork last summer addressing regulators' concerns that the addition address the health needs of the community and be available to everyone in the area, the Sun Journal reported.

Commissioner Brenda Harvey also added several conditions for the project, including asking for reports on improvements of laboratory error and infection rates, patient and employee satisfaction, lab turnaround times and other quality standards, the paper reported.
