Lewiston names Colisee buyer

A Veazie-based company that manages ice rinks will purchase the Androscoggin Bank Colisee from Lewiston.

The city plans to sell the ice arena to Firland Management by July 1, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. Details of the sale, including a price, were not disclosed. Firland manages ice arenas in Texas, New York, Louisiana and Michigan, among other states, and was hired by the city in 2004 to create a management plan for the arena, according to the paper. Details of Firland's plans for the Colisee were not available, but Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert said it would remain the home of the Lewiston Maineiacs semi-professional hockey team.

Since taking over the former Central Maine Civic Center in 2004, the city has accumulated $5.7 million in debt on the building. What will happen with that debt is unknown, but Gilbert told the Sun Journal the sale would save Lewiston its ongoing subsidies of the rink, estimated at $488,000 in 2009.
