LURC staff: Delay comp land use plan

The staff of the Land Use Regulation Commission wants to delay by several months work on the commission's comprehensive land use plan to give it more time to discuss how to handle the state's Unorganized Territory.

The LURC staff's recommendation comes after the commission's draft land use plan came under fire for its handling of the 10.5-million-acre Unorganized Territory, according to the Bangor Daily News. The LURC staff has recommended developing a working group that would meet six to eight times early next year to discuss the issue of development in the Unorganized Territory before drafting an updated plan. Critics of the draft plan, including the Maine Forest Products Council, say the commission is exaggerating the threat posed by unregulated development in that area, and that the expanse is treated more like a public park than a working forest.

The commission is scheduled to consider the staff's recommendation at a meeting tomorrow morning, according to the paper.
