Lynx rule back on table

Federal officials this week said they would revisit a 2006 ruling that exempted some land in northern Maine from wildlife protection laws, possibly throwing a wrench in development plans for the region.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday said it would reconsider rulings made in November 2006 that excluded about 10,000 acres in Maine from being designated critical habitat zones for the Canada lynx, according to the Bangor Daily News. These zones carry increased regulations and could prohibit development, the paper said.

The agency has been accused of excluding the land in order to appease private landowners like Plum Creek, which last year told the agency it was working to protect lynx habitat on its own, the paper said.

The agency will likely start the rule-making process from scratch, and could issue a new ruling in 2009, the paper reported.
