Maine logging magnate dies

Herbert Haynes Sr., a sometimes controversial player in the state's forestry industry, died this week at the age of 76.

Haynes, a Winn resident, was founder of land management firm H.C. Haynes Inc. and owned "well in excess" of 100,000 acres of Maine forestland, according to the Bangor Daily News. He supplied wood to companies like Lincoln Paper and Tissue, the paper said.

Haynes was considered an aggressive timber harvester, to the concern of some conservation groups. But he also worked with the Nature Conservancy in 2003, for example, to develop conservation plans for 10,000 acres near the West Branch of the Narraguagus River.
