Maine’s insurance regulator is warning consumers about unlicensed health insurance sellers offering to enroll people in coverage through an entity called LifeX Research Corp.
The alert comes from the Maine Bureau of Insurance, which reported that consumers are being told they will receive coverage through LifeX’s health plan by becoming employees of LifeX.
However, any health plan being offered by LifeX is not a major medical health insurance plan regulated by the bureau, the agency warned.
“Some Maine consumers have been told the LifeX health plan will be issued by a well-known health insurer,” the bureau said in a press release. “This is not true. None of the licensed health insurers offering major medical coverage in the state of Maine provide coverage to Maine consumers through LifeX.”
Some Maine consumers have also received information about other entities connected to LifeX plans, including Benefit Health Plan Inc. (BHPI) and Benefit Logistics Captive Insurance Co., even though those entities are not licensed to engage in the business of insurance in Maine.
“Unfortunately, during open enrollment for Affordable Care Act coverage, there is often an increase in unlicensed entities attempting to sell unapproved products to consumers,” the regulator warned.
Anyone contacted by phone after searching for health insurance online is urged to refrain from sharing any personal or financial information until confirming they are dealing with licensed individuals selling products from insurance companies authorized by the Maine Bureau of Insurance.
Regulators also highlighted several red flags watch for during sales calls, including a failure to identify the insurance company or claiming to be an insurance agent without providing an insurance-producer license number.
