Maine sees minor dip in population in 2015

The number of Mainers dropped a slight 0.1 percent to about 1,329,328 in 2015, according to estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released on Tuesday.

That’s a reversal from 2014, when Maine’s population was estimated to increase because migration into the state from other U.S. states and abroad countered the higher number of deaths than births that year, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The most recent estimates for Maine showed about 450 more deaths than births in 2015. Also, migration out of the state was greater than the 1,500 new immigrants, the newspaper said.

Six other states saw population declines in 2015: Connecticut, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, Vermont and West Virginia.
