Maine Water sets aside $4.6M for infrastructure upgrades
A Maine utility company has announced its $7.3 million capital plan for 2016, with the majority of the planned investment going towards upgrading an aging infrastructure.
Rick Knowlton, Maine Water’s vice president of operations, says that almost $4.6 million of the company’s planned investment in 2016 will go towards replacing inadequate or aging water mains in addition to other upgrades to the approximately 550 miles of water distribution infrastructure the utility company maintains.
Last year, Maine Water invested $8.1 million in infrastructure upgrades, including an investment of over $2.5 million towards replacing water mains across the state, with some dating back to the late 19th century.
“Water systems across the United States are due for replacement at an increasing pace, because the age of the original infrastructure in the ground approaches 100 years or more,” said Knowlton in a prepared statement. “We’re making sure public water systems support the future needs of Maine communities, including economic development and wise use of our natural water resources. And, of course, a nice bonus for the state is that this work creates a lot of construction jobs.”
Maine Water serves 32,000 customers in over 20 communities throughout Maine.
