Maine's Good Food Bus is on a roll with more market stops and members

The Good Food Bus, a seasonal market-on-wheels operated by St. Mary’s Nutrition Center and Cultivating Community from June through October, is reaching more Mainers with healthy, local food during its third season.

It makes stops in Lewiston, Auburn, Gorham and Westbrook, and once a week at Bath Iron Works in Bath, delivering local fresh produce along with foods from away such as citrus.

It also offers locally sourced eggs, cheese and bread; pre-made frozen lunch items such as burritos and soup; and Anchor Meals, boxes stocked with a recipe and all the ingredients needed to make a nutritious dinner.

“We’re happy that this healthy food initiative is continuing to grow,” said Kirsten Walter, director of St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, in a news release. “So far this year, we’ve increased the number of market stops to 15, we’ve seen an almost 80% increase in transactions, and 600 people have joined our new membership program, which provides updates, recipes and discounts.”

The Good Food Bus gets philanthropic support from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, which also funds mobile markets in Worcester, Mass.; Hartford, Conn.; Lowell, Mass; and the New Hampshire seacoast.
