Maple syrup production slows

Maine's maple syrup production is down 22% compared to 2009 because of mild spring temperatures that prevented trees from producing as much maple sugar in March as they did a year ago.

Overall, maple syrup production in the U.S. this year totaled 1.96 million gallons, down 19% from 2009. Maine produced 310,000 gallons, a 22% decrease from 2009's record high of 395,000 gallons. Vermont had the slightest decrease, with 890,000 gallons, a drop of only 3%.

In 2008, the Maine Maple Producers Association reported the state's maple syrup producers made 215,000 gallons and the crop was worth about $6.8 million.
