Marden's gets OK for largest store

Marden's officials received the OK from Scarborough planning board members to locate the discount chain's largest store on Payne Road after agreeing to make at least $200,000 in upgrades to the site.

In their second appearance before the board, Marden's representatives got approval to move into the former Wal-Mart building, clearing a regulatory hurdle that will allow the new store to open in time for the Christmas season, according to The Forecaster. Once the new store opens, the Portland branch of the chain at Pine Tree Shopping Center will likely close.

Marden's was surprised to learn of Scarborough's facade and aesthetics requirements when it first presented plans to move into the vacant building, but wanted the location enough to make the upgrades, according to the paper.
